Race Two
After working late repairing the damage to the bodywork, the mechanical staff (Grimes, Jimmy, Jan and I) decided to ascertain
the standard of the local alcoholic beverages. These were found to be tip-top and when the world was put to rights we retired
to our various places of slumber, looking forward to an exciting day.
Morning warm-up went without
a hitch. We did not make any major set-up changes and had only to scrub in a rear tyre.
Race 2 proved
to be an epic, blasting away from the line, Scud took station behind Reeves/Cluze with Birchall close in 3rd. Round
the back of the circuit Scud and Steve harried the 3 time world champion. Closing on his tail over the start/finish and out
braking him into the hairpin. Reeves retaliated immediately and Scud was back behind, pressing him all the way. Twice more
Scud and Steve found a way passed Reeves but small mistakes and some skilful driving brought him to the
front again. This let Ben and Tom catch up and when back markers got in the way they found a way through to relegated us to
3rd. 4 laps from home Birchall tried a banzai move on a backmarker going into the blisteringly fast kink on the
back straight. He clipped the kerb and slid wide, running on the grass at over 130mph.
Scud narrowly missed them both while Steve just closed his eyes and prayed. Back in second they set off after a distant Reeves/Cluze.
On the penultimate lap while sliding round Honda curve Scud heard an almighty crash felt a painful impact on his right hand.
Fearing that the front tyre had blown he backed off to make sure they were safe. Wag the bars, try the brakes.....seems OK......NAIL
IT. Going over the line in 2nd, it turns out that a chunk of rubber had been picked up by the front tyre and had
ripped the mudguard off, breaking the bracket and giving Scud an owee on his pinky. Whilst leading on lap 4 Scud and Steve
lapped at 58.852secs, breaking the lap record and earning some extra prize money.
Scud and Steve
gave TV interviews after the race and we prepared the Sidecar for the final race of the weekend.
